All therapy and counselling is about aiming towards a positive change and a more satisfying way of life. I offer all of the therapies below and as I am an integrative psychotherapist I will use a combination of any or all of these approaches if we decide to work together. As you are, of course, an individual, we would discuss the hopes and expectations you have of therapy to determine the best approach for you to reach your full potential.
If you would like to, please contact me to arrange a free initial consultation of 30 minutes with no obligation.
Counselling is a talking therapy which is often short term, with a specific goal. You may embark on a course of counselling after experiencing a distressing event such as a relationship breakdown, bereavement or illness. Counselling provides an opportunity to talk in confidence, being met with empathy, genuine compassion and non judgement. The focus will often be to work through a particular crisis or conflict, towards a resolution. The emphasis is on supporting you as you find your own answers within in a safe and accepting environment. It is most beneficial if you commit to at least six sessions of counselling. This gives us long enough to gain an understanding of how you are meeting the event and how we might approach it.
Psychotherapy is usually a longer term, in depth exploration of underlying patterns from the past and their influence on the present. Good objective listening is the basis of all psychotherapy and counselling and leads to the discovery of strengths and weaknesses, values and priorities and an understanding that leads to change and growth. It is not an easy process and may feel uncomfortable as you look below the surface and talk about things that are normally hidden. As your therapist I will be committed to supporting you and treating you with respect and integrity as you work within the therapeutic relationship. Psychotherapy is a challenging human and personal experience between the client and the therapist. Therefore it is a process that requires a commitment of time and effort from both parties. It can last from a few months to over a year. When we feel the therapy may be nearly complete we will discuss how and when you would like to finish and work towards it together.
Clinical Hypnotherapy is the application of hypnotic techniques to bring about positive change. You will be guided by means of my voice into a pleasant relaxed state that feels a bit like daydreaming. It is a state of inner absorption, concentration and focussed attention. You will remain fully aware and in control and cannot be influenced to do anything against your will or nature. Because I speak directly to your sub-conscious, the positive suggestions will bypass the critical mind. This enables you to remove old, self-limiting beliefs, self-defeating behaviours and thoughts and replace them with new positive thoughts that will allow you to realise your full potential. Hypnotherapy will release tensions and remove blocks trapped in the emotional past, thus releasing you to be free from stress, anxiety and negative habits. Change takes place on a deep level and can happen in a relatively short space of time. For hypnotherapy to succeed the client need to be as motivated and committed as the therapist.
BrainWorking Recursive Therapy (BWRT) is a very new type of therapy based on recent research in neuroscience. It is fast, focussed based, effective and almost content free. As it is such a new model of working, there is a separate tab to explain more.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a type of talking treatment that focuses on how your thoughts, beliefs and attitudes affect your feelings and behaviour, and teaches you coping skills for dealing with different problems. It combines cognitive therapy (examining the things you think) and behaviour therapy (examining the things you do). This therapy is based on the idea that the way we think about situations can affect the way we feel and behave. So, if you interpret a situation negatively then you might experience negative emotions as a result, and those feelings might then lead you to behave in a negative way. Negative thinking patterns can start from childhood onwards. If you didn't receive much attention or praise from your parents or teachers at school, you might've thought "I'm useless, I'm not good enough". Over time you might come to believe these assumptions, until as an adult these negative thoughts become automatic. This way of thinking might then affect how you feel at work, university or in your general life. If your negative interpretation of situations goes unchallenged, then these patterns in your thoughts, feelings and behaviour can become part of a continuous cycle. During CBT these thoughts are explored and challenged leading to a change in your thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
Informal Counselling takes place in a single session, with no long-term commitment and is unstructured, spontaneous and led by you. Within a safe, supportive and neutral space you can talk openly to me, an objective, non judgemental listener, about anything, be it an unexpected crisis or an on-going difficulty. It is a one off session, rather than a process and as such, provides a space of up to 2 hours for you to explore your thoughts and feelings in confidence, whilst gaining clarity and understanding around what you would like to do or alter. It may be that you simply feel lighter, more hopeful, more decisive, less distressed, calmer and more relaxed. Talking things through can make a positive difference to how we feel but family and friends may feel too close and involved. A one off session with me, every now and then to thrash it out, could be all that's needed to cope more effectively with life. My function will not be to give you any answers but to help you find some for yourself. You can book a session whenever you feel you need one and it can last from one up to two hours according to how much time you feel you need.
Skype/Face Time/Telephone Counselling make counselling accessible even to those who have difficulty visiting a consulting room due to transport problems, lack of time, disabilities or mental health issues. It is now a popular way to receive therapy and can be done so from the comfort of your own home. Telephone, Skype and Face Time counselling can be used to explore all the issues that face to face counselling does. Although therapy is carried out on the phone or computer, I am still bound by the same code of ethics as with conventional counselling.
If you choose to engage in this type of counselling, after the free initial consultation we will arrange a set of appointments, usually on a weekly basis, at a convenient time for you. You will then call me at my consulting room - at the arranged time and our session will begin. As we will not physically meet each other, payment will be required via BACS before each session.
